Blogging with a Target: is there a Tribe for Fine Art Photographers?

Over the past few months I’ve used the blog mainly for shameless self promotion/communication of what was happening to me and less for talking about photography or for commenting what was going on on the photoblogosphere. I apologize for being so selfish but time has been limited and, as I wrote (in Italian) here, blogging something interesting means time and effort. It’s also worth to say that I’ve started twitting more and, hey!, twitter is absolutely interesting and intriguing and, for sure, need just a breeze of time blog normally deserve.

I actually know that this way of behaving bring your regular readers far from your blog. At the end of the day who cares about your nth news? Probably just a very small part of regular readers. Most can be interested in something different. Yes, something different what? Over the last years of blogging (started back in 2004) I’ve covered different aspects, from technologies and techniques to Art, from camera-related topics to interesting findings/takes from the NET. I’ve done it in different languages, sometimes only in Italian, sometimes in both languages. Now, everybody keeps saying that blogging and social media are an important aspect of every photographers (marketing) strategies. There is a group of fellow twitters (@PicSehsu, @NewMediaPhoto, @jimgoldstein, just to mention some of them) that are intelligently focusing on the mission of bringing photographers to use of social tools. Rosh has also a nice blog devoted to this task.
But an important thing is to try to understand clearly WHY are we blogging (or socialmediactvie), and WHICH is our target audience. Last year there was an interesting attempt made by DLK to classify blogs with a triangle (just for photography as ART) whose sides where CURATE/PROMOTE/COMMENT. It is a useful classification that starts from the view point of (part of) the OFFER, but does not cover the viewpoint of the DEMAND. Yes, the demand. Which is the demand of who’s looking for photography on the Net? And WHO’s actually looking for photography on the Internet? Art and/or Technique (let’s try to keep this simplistic distinction at the moment)? These are million dollars (or, even worse, Euros) questions with not a single, definite answer. I believe that an enormous mass of blog readers are photographers (mostly amateur) that are primarily interested in gears and techniques to improve their shots. This assumptions comes from the analysis of statistics on my posts reading (will cover later) but, more then that, from the moves the photographers as Chase Jarvis made on the Internet. Here’s the oversimplified recipe: you blog on some technique. You are a cool guy and look extremely successful as a photographer. You probably start becoming a model for a lot of aspiring photogs, since, from what can be perceived online, you’re life is a metaphor for most people holding a camera (for passion or for work). Just before the announcement of The Best Camera apps for the iPhone I was keeping asking myself: why does Chase do all of that? Kudos to Chase, he surely hit the target. A nice application for the most relevant market niche of fellows photographers that came out AFTER building a complete community: probably a new business model for making money out of photography (I agree with Doug Menuez here). Same applies for David Du Chemin who puts more focus on education (with direct and ebooks focused offers) but that, again, is hitting the greatest marketing niche.
If you resisted so far to this (arguable) overview on marketing considerations, I would like to elaborate towards a perspective that is closer to mine. I’m not a full time commercial photographer, I do not promote seminars or workshops, I’m mostly an (emerging – horrible word but still very much used :-/ ) (fine art) photographer. So which is my niche as a blogger? Who should be my targets readers? Photo buyers and collectors, galleries and museums. Am I getting closer to this niche with the Blog? Is there a content of Interest for them? I think we are back to the Art Triangle. With a great difference from who’s currently making that triangle live, which is “who am I”. As a photographer I can PROMOTE (as I did) some works I like. I can please a friend, but still simply think that photographers are not the best at promoting other colleagues works (maybe I’m wrong, and, of course, I’m fully open to discussion). For sure I would feel myself really uncomfortable at “curating” or “commenting”, I simply don’t have the “right profile” and I also feel that too much writing brings slowly far from photography (or, at least give the impressions that you’re more writing that taking pictures as Rosh write here). Is just promoting interesting for my target niche? Not sure about it… So where is my tribe or, do I have a tribe on the Internet outside other photographers? Are the consideration and thoughts of a photographer interesting for his potential market? Or being socially active means just getting more hits and hence becoming more known with the idea that in the big mass we could also hit some of our potential target niches? Lot of questions, would love to hear your viewpoint.Related Posts:

Fotoritocco e Fine Art

Lo spunto di questa riflessione viene dalla vicenda che brevemente vi racconto. Edgar Martins, un fotografo portoghese, vincitore, lo scorso anno della prima edizione del New York Photo Awards, viene inviato dal New York Times per un servizio che documenti l’America incompiuta, tutte quelle costruzioni non ultimate a causa della crisi economica. Edgar è un bravo “fine art” photographer, con alcuni lavori carichi di interesse e di mistero. L’essay viene pubblicato sul Times. Fino a quando alcuni fotografi di una community non si accorgono che alcune foto, una in particolare, sono “pesantemente” (ma anche amatorialmente) fotoritoccate. Il meccanismo, nell’esempio qui sotto, è un semplice Mirror con l’intento di dare alla foto una perfetta simmetria, ma anche a far sì che le scale al centro del fotogramma non portino da nessuna parte.

Non voglio speculare su quanto ci sia di vero (anche se gli esempi sono davvero TROPPO autesplicativi) ma piuttosto sugli effetti. Il primo risultato è stato che il NYT ha rimosso l’essay dal sito riportando quanto segue:

A picture essay in The Times Magazine on Sunday and an expanded slide show on NYTimes.com entitled “Ruins of the Second Gilded Age” showed large housing construction projects across the United States that came to a halt, often half-finished, when the housing market collapsed. The introduction said that the photographer, a freelancer based in Bedford, England, “creates his images with long exposures but without digital manipulation.”
A reader, however, discovered on close examination that one of the pictures was digitally altered, apparently for aesthetic reasons. Editors later confronted the photographer and determined that most of the images did not wholly reflect the reality they purported to show. Had the editors known that the photographs had been digitally manipulated, they would not have published the picture essay, which has been removed from NYTimes.com.

Della faccenda si sono diffusamente occupati “A Photo Editor” e “Conscentious“. La risposta “ufficiale” del fotografo è attesa in queste ore anche se in un intervista Edgar aveva dichiarato di non fare uso di fotomanipolazione nei suoi lavori.
La questione è di interesse. Secondo le regole del NYT, il fotografo ha sbagliato (e, a mio avviso, si è anche parzialmente giocato la reputazione). Nulla da eccepire. E’ chiaro che forse in Fine Art il ricorso a cloning & Healing è più “accetabile” di quanto sia in fotogiornalismo, ma è anche innegabile una convergenza tra i due mondi (al punto da assegnare un compito del genere ad un fine art photographer e non ad un fotogiornalista)… Mi viene quindi da pensare che se Martins avesse fatto delle elaborazioni meno marchiane la storia sarebbe passata sotto traccia, eludendo (come avevano all’inizio fatto anche questi scatti) persino il photo editor del New York Times. Mi viene di credere che Martins non sia, in effetti, un fautore del cloning, come da lui stesso dichiarato, e che questa esperienza sia un segno di scarsa padronanza dei mezzi, un errore da neofita di photoshop, sotto pressione per un assignment di alto livello. E mi viene da concludere che, una volta di più, parafrasando Diane Arbus, la fotografia è un segreto su un segreto…. di un ulteriore segreto che è quello che avviene nelle camere chiare dei fotografi moderni….Related Posts:

Lavazza e Annie

Sono rimasto senza parole quando, poco fa, ho visto questa fotografia del nuovo calendario Lavazza scattato nientemeno che da Annie Leibovitz.

Brutto tutto. Colori sovrassaturi, espressione della modella, Romolo e Remo sotto la Lupa al Colosseo…! Il Festival del brutto. Avevo visto le altre fotografie, anche loro nulla di che. Mi domando quanto ci sia della Leibovitz in questi scatti. E quanto invece ci sia di un’idea provinciale, commerciale e stereotipale di Italietta, da passare per forza, con tutti i suoi simboli, per un mercato globalizzato e povero di cultura dell’immagine ma ricchissimo di eccessi di Photoshop.Related Posts:

Sulla creatività

Ultimamente mi sono imbattuto in una “perla”: l’intervento, all’AIGA, di Malcom Gladwell sulla storia dei Fleetwood Mac. Lo so, sembra ironico e poco attinente ad un blog fotografico. E infatti, per certi versi, anche il modo presentare di Gladwell fa sorridere. Malcom è un cronista del Washington Post nonchè autore di libri arguti. La sua ultima fatica si chiama “Outliers” e racconta della vita di diversi personaggi diventati famosi e della parabola del loro successo:

…In the case of Outliers, the book grew out a frustration I found myself having with the way we explain the careers of really successful people…

Una “chiave” che, secondo l’autore, ha a che fare con un assioma, recentemente dimostrato con poche eccezioni da un gruppo di psicologi: la regola delle 10.000 ore. Sembra che servano infatti 10 anni (10.000 ore a 4 ore al giorno, 4 ore di dedizione) per riuscire a diventare dei maestri in qualsiasi campo, sia esso artistico che tecnico/scientifico:

“… it says that any kind of complex cognitive task takes 10,000 hours of deliberate practice to master and it’s — what’s extraordinary about this rule, the 10,000-Hour rule, is that it seems to apply to virtually everything that’s complicated.”

A meno che non si sia dotati di un tipo di creatività “esplosiva”, quella di cui era dotato, ad esempio Picasso, il cosiddetto “conceptual innovator”:

“… a man, who over the course of his career, is possessed by a series of truly revolutionary ideas, which he expresses in his art immediately…“

Ai Fleetwood Mac sono serviti 10 anni e 15 album prima di produrre un lavoro che ha avuto un successo enorme, “Rumors”. Mozart, che ha iniziato da bambino prodigio a 11 anni ha scritto la sua prima opera rilevante a 22 (il concerto n. 9, K 271). Cezanne, che per Gladwell è l’archetipo dei creativi “lenti”, ha iniziato a produrre opere rilevanti a circa cinquanta anni. Il famoso matematico Andrew Wiles ha impiegato dieci anni per dimostrare il teorema di Fermat. In un certo qual modo le tesi di Malcom sono “consolatorie”: i “creativi lenti”, gli “experimental innovator”, sono la maggior parte di noi. In un certo qual modo però la nostra società è antitetica a questi processi creativi…. Se non sei subito GENIALE, se non hai successo con il primo hit non sei nessuno. E questo, indubbiamente, causa un generale impoverimento della qualità delle cose che si producono, in un generale mordi-e-fuggi che assomiglia tanto ai ritmi frenetici di Internet (dei quali parlo qui), alla difficoltà di intavolare una discussione ragionata e “lenta” (di cui parlo qui).
La cosa interessante è che il tempo non passa invano. Si matura, si riflette e le cose, lentamente assumono contorni più definiti. Ma fa anche “male”. Si diventa più esigenti, si va più facilmente in stallo, a volte forse ci si blocca… Il che è, in effetti, contro la regola delle 10000 ore. I blocchi creano ritardi…. Un’idea interessante la suggerisce Brooks Jensen (editor di Lenswork) che, dal 1986, ha istituito l’autodisciplina del “100 Prints Project“. Consiste nel produrre una fotografia ogni tre giorni, una buona fotografia:

“By commiting myself to post a new image every third day for a year, I hope to push myself to create 100 new images. “Artistic discipline” is a bit of an oxymoron, but being an artist and not producing work is just plain moronic”.

Resta da settare il “T0” delle nostre 10.000 ore. E contare, lentamente, da lì…Related Posts:
