I’ve been selected for FRESH FAIRS, a juried exhibition that will open tonight and close on April 25th.

At the Photo Fair, that runs within The Month of Photography Los Angeles (MOPLA), works from Sichuan, Simulacra and Refinery Flocks will be on display.

Works on consignment on the East Coast at the Farmani Gallery.

Lucie Foundation E-pprentice Mentor Program

I’ve been selected, together with other 8 photographers, for the inaugural edition of the Lucie Foundation E-pprentice Mentor Program. The program pairs, for six months an emeging talent and and established professional. The mentorship started in February and it is really a stimulating experience. This is an excerpt from the press release:

The Lucie Foundation announces the first round of participants for E-pprentice, a new and exciting electronic mentorship that uses technology to bridge the physical distance between emerging and professional photographers. Through the program, “mentees” receive criticism and guidance from their mentors who are leaders and innovators of the photography industry. This modern
mentorship utilizes instant messaging and video chat programs to allow critique and discussions to occur.

The “mentees” were selected through an international, online, submissions process.
Those selected from the large pool of impressive candidates showed a solid technical
grasp and submitted a series of images that displayed a consistent aesthetic and sound
concept. The Lucie Foundation has paired each with a mentor that shares a similar
aesthetic and established this program to further expound on a specific tier of the mission
statement, which is to discover and cultivate emerging talent.

The series of photographs capture what appear to be ‘islands of light’ at night. There is a sense of confined gloom fighting with darkness that all around turns into oblivion and mystery. This shroud of brightness envelopes all things that are built as a defense, both the physical and the light barrier. The islands of light represent US navy housing complexes and structures located nearby, in a dark and silent countryside. They are confined and isolated ‘towns’ that are built for American soldiers and their families to live all around the world. It is an interesting example of a type of modern auto-segregation for a Nation symbolic of universal freedom…

Refinery Flocks (2006/2009)

Refinery Flocks is the resulting project of the previous Refinery Flock (2006), Refinery Again (2008). It comprises a selection of the photographs of both projects plus some new photographs taken in late 2009. The project is visible here and under “Works->Refinery Flock” on the Portfolio.

Nature is able to adapt. Recently, for instance, great catastrophes, as petrol spills in the sea, did not produce, in some cases, all the predicted effects thanks to the extraordinary resilience of ecological systems. Our planet evolution, even if only in the last century heavy marked by the so called “industrial progress”, always showed an exceptional adaptation to changes.
Only in the last decades, human influence became more and more invasive. Too few years to understand complex evolution dynamics that need centuries. For sure it surprises to capture, sometimes, a certain “synergy” between the monstrous products of the Progress and natural species. This project, that starts from the utilitarian relationship between birds flocks and the
heat emitted by a Refinery, would like to investigate these “symbiotic” aspects, these precarious equilibria between industries and animals, between men made artifacts and Nature. Not with the common idea of represent how horrible are humans creations, but aiming at highlighting possible and strange harmonies.

Gente di Fotografia, an Italian magazine dedicated to Fine Art Photography, features in this issue (nr. 48) my project Simulacra. Gente di Fotografia is a 15 years old magazine, published four times a year, and is considered one of the most interesting publication focused on promoting photography across Italy. This issue features works by Michael Chelbin, Walter Ferro, Carlo Desideri, Paola Fiorini, Daniele Papa, Romain Laurent and Salvatore Ligios, Ernesto Bazan & Mimmo Jodice.

Refinery Triptych has been selected for The Center for Fine Art Photograph’s New Visions exhibition by Juror, Michael Itkoff, editor of Daylight Magazine, from nearly 1,200 submissions for this call for entries. The Exhibition will take place in February next year.

The list is contained in a new volume called Young Blood 2008 that has been presented today by the Italian Ministry of Youth, Giovanna Meloni. Refinery Flocks on Hey Hot Shot

My Refinery Flocks is today featured on the Hey Hot Shot Blog.

The work of Massimo Cristaldi is concerned with the ineffable qualities of the visible world. Here, nature and industry make an unlikely pair, yet they make a conceptual reciprocation. The flock of starlings in this photograph are drawn to the refinery’s thermal flows; en masse they create a kind of super-organism that almost emulates the scale of the artificial complex. And, they create an amazing visual tension as well.

Having written about his body of work Simulacra elsewhere, I continue to be drawn to the ideas behind his photographs, which in his words represent “possible and strange harmonies.” He adds, “I dedicate a particular interest to boundary lands in unstable balance between progress and leftover traces of a time gone.”

Based in Catania and Rome, Massimo has received awards from the Prix de Photographie de Paris and International Photography Awards this year alone. Much more can be seen at his website, which The New York Times recently called out as a must-see portfolio site.

Simulacra: una recensione di Alan Rapp

Alan Rapp, Associate Director of Hey Hot Shot, wrote a great review on my “Simulacra” project on his interesting blog “Critical Terrain“. Critical Terrain is where the images, objects, concepts, and disciplines that shape the designed environment are explored and interpreted. Thank you, Alan, for the insightful and intriguing observations on my work.

Alan writes:

Massimo Cristaldi’s Simulacra depicts small-scale religious edifices in silent, nocturnal composure. Taken from an impersonal middle distance, the Sicilian and Southern Italian roadside shrines in these pictures are humble, sentinel. The icons within them are unseen, even preempting visibility with their own interior glow.
Whether freestanding and bound solidly to the earth, or tucked into massive exterior walls, these votive structures yield to Cristaldi’s subtle exploration of their latent luminous qualities via long exposures. There is a sense of loss, perhaps less religious than cultural, allowing to “galloping globalization and by general indifference,” as Cristaldi writes. Cristaldi adopts Baudrillard’s elaboration of simulacra as the theme of this body of work. Here there are levels of both representation and simulation (which Baudrillard distinguishes among): the subject of the photograph is an edifice to an invisible God (or Mother or saint thereof). In this respect, Cristaldi writes, “these photographs are simulacra of simulacra.” (To this one could add an additional level: the architectural. Comprised as much by the negative space of the arch as the columns which describe them, and topped by munchkin pediments, these structures are caricatures of classical architecture in miniature.)
The tracery of automobile lights disorients the reverential purpose of these structures—they are little more than road markers. But Cristaldi also creates an additional irony: the head- and tail-lights describe numinous orbits around the shrines. These cars may be the last angels attendant to the divine.
Simulacra was recently been awarded an Honorable Mention by the International Photography Awards, and the New York Times recently included his web site in its round-up of compelling photographer’s sites. Equally oblique and haunting, for the human tragedy which he addresses, is his suite Lampedusa (Wrecked Dreams).
