Depentendency

25 June 2009 § 0

Ground Zero has been exhibited from June 4th to 7th in Venezia, within the collective exhibition organized by Celeste Prize named “Depentendency” .
The work, only photograph, has been selected between 700 candidates by a jury composed by MARK GISBOURNE, ADRIENNE GÖHLER AND VICTORIA LU with the following motivation:

The powerful aspect of Massimo Cristaldi’s ‘Ground Zero’ photograph, in one of retained mystery, telling of the site post-disaster, and doubling an extraordinary mental sense of composure, that is in simply compositional terms and in a more far reaching sense meditatively.

The location of the exhibition was really remarkable. 10 small bricks houses, in the park of the island of Certosa, the historic armory used in the pas as munitions storage depots. Isola della Certosa is a small island right in front of the Arsenale gates.

‘Dependtendency’ theme
Buddist thought is based on there being a relationship of mutual dependence between persons and objects: reality is the convergence of all its parts in a single unit. According to this philosophy, a dualist vision which separates earth from sky, subject from object, or man and nature, does not exist. Implicit in the attitude which derives from mutual dependence is respect for persons and nature. Instead, western thought has developed the idea of objectifying the world attempting to dominate it through the use of technology.
This thought process has inevitably led to a degree of nihilism evident in the world today, in which there is an uncontrolled development of technology and a critical conscience which attempts to fit thoughts according to the challenges present at any particular moment in time. The aimless state of nihilism which exists today, characterised by an environmental emergency, a waste of the planet’s resources, the ever-growing imbalance between people and nations, has accelerated this thought process. As time passes we realise the growing difficulties our planet is experiencing and that everything within it is dependent on everything else. A vision of reality which takes into account the inter-relationship of everything, similar to that expressed in oriental philosophies expressed in a non-dualistic manner, appears to be in the ascendancy: a holistic vision for our system which takes into account all its complexities.
We would like to bring these themes to the attention of artists worldwide and ask those sufficiently stimulated to prepare a work for a special exhibition to be held in Venice during the 53rd Visual Arts Biennal. Each artist, according to his or her cultural origins and the chosen mode of expression, will bring a particular interpretation, perspective and sensibility to the theme, in order to create an exhibition which enables a common forum of communication.
The theme to ‘Dependtendency’ was born out of a conversation between Steven Music and Giancarlo Vianello, and presented to the City of Venice as a current, interntional issue around which visual artists could elaborate specific works according to their cultural roots – February 2009.

New Photos of an old Earthquake

22 April 2009 § 2

Forty years ago. Belice valley Earthquake (Sicily/Italy). 6.3 Richter, 370 deaths, 70.000 evacuees. Poggioreale, Gibellina, Salaparuta, Salemi, Menfi and other towns destroyed or heavily damaged. In some cases entirely rebuilt elsewhere. In the case of Poggioreale, that look still nearly ok from the distance, on his cultivated hill, the feeling, with the images of the Abruzzo Earthquake in mind, is terrifying. Only noises are the insects buzz and the clashes of broken doors moved by wind. A ghost town in Italian mood. With the hope that the town of Onna or other cities in Abruzzo, will NOT look, in forty years, this way.

Refinery Again on Exposurecompensation

7 March 2009 § 0

Miguel Garcia-Guzman, editor of Exposure Compensation, one of the fine art photography blogs I normally read, has just posted about my new project Refinery Again.

Refinery Again

25 February 2009 § 0

After three years I’m back to the Refinery to represent, again, flocks of birds. This time in  a different light condition and in a different season. And with a new interest, focused not only to the flocks themselves, but also on the Refinery. Again. Refinery Again. Available in “New Projects/Refinery Again on portfolio.

Nature is able to adapt. Recently, for instance, great catastrophes, as petrol spills in the sea, did not produce, in some cases, all the predicted effects thanks to the extraordinary resilience of ecological systems. Our planet evolution, even if only in the last century heavy marked by the so called “industrial progress”, always showed an exceptional adaptation to changes. Only in the last decades, human influence became more and more invasive. Too few years to understand complex evolution dynamics that need centuries. For sure it surprises to capture, sometimes, a certain “synergy” between the monstrous products of the Progress and natural species. This project, that starts from the utilitarian relationship between birds flocks and the heat emitted by a Refinery, would like to investigate these “symbiotic” aspects, these precarious equilibria between industries and animals, between men made artefacts and Nature. Not with the common idea of represent how horrible are humans creations, but aiming at representing possible and strange harmonies.

British Journal of Photography

8 February 2009 § 4

Il numero del 28 Gennaio del British Journal of Photography pubblica un breve reportage sulle fotografie che hanno vinto il Travel Photographer of the Year 2008. L’articolo, leggibile anche online, si intitola “Travel the world and make money doing it” e riporta un paragrafo su di me che considero particolarmente lusinghiero:

Best of the best?

With this in mind, it was interesting to look through the entries to the 2008 Travel Photographer of the Year. Many simply rehashed the same old travel images in vogue 10 years ago. Of more interest were the more contemporary efforts. I was particularly struck by the image of Ground Zero taken by Italian photographer, Massimo Cristaldi, which won the One Shot – Destination Anywhere category. It’s intriguing in its simplicity, yet haunting and serene. The fact that it’s not completely perfect technically really doesn’t matter because in one single image it captures the essence of a million articles written on Ground zero.

Frammenti di Sicilia

31 December 2008 § 0

massimo_cristaldi_book_01

“Frammenti di Sicilia” is my first book and covers three different Sicily aspects, observed between Air, Earth and Water. The first project in the book focuses on the contradictory relationship between man and Nature. Refinery warmth is the attraction for millions of birds and industrial chemnays, symbol of chemical waste, become suddenly a refugee. Other lives, gestures, expressions in the second project, where men are the main subject in an ancient world, still alive. A the boundaries of the Earth, at the “South of the South” the only life remains the sea and the ones of the fantastic creatures created by the photographer point of view.

The introductions are by Irene Giuffrida, Franco De Grazia and Ninfa Leotta. The book, 40 pages in total, has a hard cover and it is available, using PAYPAL:

    Lavazza e Annie

    18 December 2008 § 7

    TPOTY

The Travel Photographer of the Year contest has announced the list of winning, special mentioned and shortlisted photographers. I’m glad to communicate that my photograph “Ground Zero“, part of the Impressions of NYC project,  won the Travel Photographer of the Year 2008 Contest in the category Destination Anywhere.

Judges verdict on the photographs is:

Massimo’s engaging shot of the view over Ground Zero in New York captures a sense of place in the most thought provoking and graphic way. Harsh lighting and simplicity create a strong sense of both drama and serenity.

Travel Photographer of the Year, at his 5th edition, received circa 10.000 entries from photographers in 61 countries, and shortlisted entrants from 33 countries went through to the final judging round. I’ve got a special mention in “Call of the Wild” category and been shorlisted in”Life“. Category winners for 2008 come from Australia, Italy, the UK and USA, with photographers from Kenya, India, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland among the other prizewinners. This year’s judging panel included Caroline Metcalfe (Picture Editor, Conde Nast Traveller), Ian Farrell (Editor, Professional Photographer), renowned wildlife photographer and author Chris Weston, Erin Moroney (head of Axiom photographic agency), photographer and TV cameraman Jeremy Hoare, Simon Bainbridge (Editor, British Journal of Photography), photographer, author and lecturer Nick Meers, and imaging experts Mark Bannister and Terry Steeley.

The winning images will be displayed at the Travel Photographer of the Year exhibition at Focus on Imaging, on of Europe’s largest imaging show, in February 2009. They will also be published in the TPOTY Journey Three book. Winners Gallery is visible here.
